Jonathan Buckels

Jonathan is a choreographer and dancer who works between Berlin, Germany and Perth, Australia. Jonathan trained at the Victorian College of the Arts and The Diana Waldron Ballet Academy, Australia.

As a dancer, he has worked for the last twelve years in numerous dance groups in Germany including the Oldenburg Staattheater, MSSchrittmacher, SETanzthaeter, Tanztheater Hagen, Sabine Seume.Ensemble and the Mark Sieczkarek Company. In Australia he has performed in STRUT dance's season of Thomas Lehman's Schreibstück (2007) and with Buzz Dance Theatre for the work Genie(us), 2009 and choreographed and performed in Perth City Ballet's full length season of Carmen (2007) at the Quarry Amphitheatre.

Most recently Jonathan has worked with various Aerial Harness and Simulated Flying techniques in Germany with Brendan Shelper, director of production company battleROYAL. As a performer with battleROYAL Jonathan has worked on numerous large scale live performance events including the Ferrari World Grand Opening in Abu Dhabi and the 2011 FIS World Alpine Ski Championships Opening Ceremony in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, for which he was also the Assistant Director.

Jonathan created his first full-length work in 2003 with Gäello Morello, co-choreographing the work Amor und Psychose for the Globe Theater, Hagen. In 2008 Jonathan created the dance theatre work solo with Carsten Clemens which they performed at numerous festivals in Germany and Perth, Australia. This work has since been developed into a full length piece and has been re-named Oddeesee. Oddeesee premiered at LOFFT Theatre's Tanzoffensive (Leipzig) in 2009 to critical acclaim.

In 2011 Jonathan's full length work fuse was selected by STRUT dance for presentation at PICA Performance Space, Perth WA, as part of a two week STRUT performance season. The season attracted a diverse audience (including many newcomers to contemporary dance) who were largely encouraged by the work's poetic, yet deeply 'human' qualities.

Both fuse and Oddeesee explore complex intricacies at work within intimate human relationships - a subject Jonathan continues to explore in his ongoing choreographic practice.

Love can give you the chance to change almost any facet of yourself to fit the needs of the object of your desire. But exactly how do we negotiate those changes when it comes to those we love?

fuse shows how sometimes this manipulation of self identity can lead to explosive consequence.

This duet dance work is driven by emotion, self-deprecating humour and a dynamic physicality as Buckels's two characters grapple with that which is closest to their hearts, yet completely beyond their control.

"fuse didn't portray a fairytale where love conquered all, instead it danced a snapshot of the life of two people which I'm sure all audience members were able to relate to. I found it the portrayal candid, tumultuous and at times beautiful." - audience member, Aug 2011.
