Rhiannon Newton

Rhiannon Newton is a dancer and performance maker whose practice is currently focused on cross-disciplinary projects and collaborative partnerships.

In 2010 Rhiannon developed the dance work The Check Point Solo with choreographer/ director Jo Pollitt. The Check Point Solo is a mid length solo dance work created using a year's worth of long distance correspondence between the two artists. The piece offers 'check-points' and revelations of an evolving and responsive body, and has been presented at the Brisbane Festival's Under The Radar festival (2011); in a First Run season at Lucy Guerin Inc (2011), and at a performance season presented by the Movement Research Centre at the Judson Church in New York (2011).

In 2011 Rhiannon was awarded a STRUT dance SEED residency to develop a dance film work with choreographer Chrissie Parrott and filmmaker Mia Holton. The result of this residency/ collaboration was a dance film and photography installation entitled Parched. Parched was filmed on the salt lakes of Menzies, in the Goldfields region of WA, and reflects ideas of desolation, hope and loss, as both the lone female performer and the land on which she stands struggle for survival.

Rhiannon is currently working with visual artist Benjamin Forster to develop a new interdisciplinary performance and installation work looking at various relationships which existing between architecture, drawing and movement.

As a dancer Rhiannon has performed professionally since 2008, working with artists such as Anouk van Dijk (Holland 2008), Odelya Kupperberg (Israel 2009 - 2010) and Chrissie Parrott (2009-2011).

The Check Point Solo

(a 30 minute solo dance work)
Premiere seasons at the Under the Radar Festival Brisbane & Judson Church, New York, 2011.

Tel Aviv, Amsterdam, Spain, Perth: A correspondence collected and performed. A woman stands at the height of her stakes embodying the weight and distance of a year. Check points and revelations of an evolving and responsive body.

The Check Point Solo is the result of 12 months of correspondence, research and development undertaken by Jo Pollitt and Rhiannon Newton between Jan and Dec 2010. The process was predominantly driven by physical scores and written responses created by the artists over 12 months of long distance correspondence while they were situated in different parts of the world (Israel and Perth). The 'language' they developed over this year-long correspondence was then used to inform six weeks of one-on-one work in the studio (in Perth). It was here that the elements of movement, text, photographic image, response and imagination were shaped into its final form as a new mid-length solo work.

The work has been presented at the Brisbane Festival's Under The Radar (2011); Lucy Guerin Inc's First Run(2011), and at Judson Church, New York in (2011).
