Sam Fox- Hydra Poesis

Sam Fox is a performance maker who draws on his dance, visual theatre and writing practice to create hybrid works that entail finely crafted challenges for audiences. Sam is the founder/director of independent company Hydra Poesis based at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Arts Studios, Perth.

Sam trained as a contemporary dancer at Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. Upon graduating in 2003 he co-founded performance group Tall Concrete Collective, creating large scale site specific works blending live dance, animation and sound over three years with support from the Artrage Incubator program and the Australia Council's Spark initiative.

During these formative years Sam also developed as a facilitator and producer of multi-arts, community based projects, festivals and research programs. Notable appointments include: Artistic Director of STEPS Youth Dance Company (2007 & 2008) - creating the acclaimed work NOSPACE (2008) and delivering a new community cultural development program, Festival Associate Producer - ARTRAGE 2005, and Associate Director/Producer Crossfire - A Dance Phenomenon (2004). As a researcher Sam has received a number of commissions including a "provocative review of the DCA Young People & the Arts policy" (2008), and by Committee for Perth to develop a vision for a new youth arts hub in the city (2011). Sam has been an invited presenter at national and international conferences including: the National Dance Forum (2011), the Young People and the Arts Australia Symposium (2010) and the WAsh electronic arts delegation to Shanghai (2009). He is about to complete a Research Masters at Murdoch University.

Sam founded Hydra Poesis in 2006 as a vehicle to explore critical exchange and inquiry with audiences. This exchange is built upon the potential for imagery and action as a dynamic carrier of shared political and cultural investigation. Sam's works are surprising and respect the audience to be up for a challenge. Over the last twelve months Hydra Poesis has produced a full length, critically acclamed hybrid dance work, Personal Political Physical Challenge (PICA 2010), a short film commissioned by the NEXT WAVE Festival, and is currently in the second phase development of major work Prompter Live Studio (PLS). PLS is a live theatre work that involves an online chorus literally streaming into the performance from around the world. The work is mentored by Pacitti Company (UK) and is supported by the Australia Council Theatre Board, DCA and the WA Theatre Development Initiative.

A suburban couple's quest for reconnection and depth through radicalising exercises in their garage coincides with a surreal and conceptually impossible anniversary celebration.

Featuring dance, theatre and flaming design, this show is a provocative, entertaining and adult extrapolation of the childhood game of risk; truth, dare, physical challenge. A uniquely high stakes experience.

Directed by performance innovator Sam Fox and choreographed in collaboration with an ensemble cast led by Rachel Ogle and Martin Hansen. The work features original composition by Perth's own woman-Korg-laptop-matrix: Stina, and design from Hydra Poesis' interdisciplinary production team.
