STRUT dance is proud to have presented Tongues of Stone a unique promenade dance performance created by New Zealand choreographer Carol Brown and spatial designer Dorita Hannah.
Dancers wove a journey through Perth's architecture revealing hidden and forgotten stories, changing the rhythm of the city, making concrete space speak through dance.
Starting from the Wellington Street train station (entrance under the horseshoe bridge) a woman in a white bridal dress emerged from the Perth underground and commenced a flight through the city; leading the audience with her on her journey through Perth laneways (Wolf Lane, His Majesty's Theatre Lane, Munster Lane); St Martins Place and Westralia Square.
At each of the seven sites along the route a short choreographed performance revealed fragments of the past, inspired by the stories that lie beneath the surface of the City.
Fifteen female dancers took part in the performance, which aimed to give voice to women from our past in a city that has grown on a mining industry boom.
Transitory glimpses were free to all, offering an alternative way to view our City, or paid audience members followed the entire route with headsets listening to the performance with sound design by Russell Scoones.

Audiences rediscovered the urban spaces they pass by and interact with every day, spaces that hold fractured memories of a wetlands landscape built over and forgotten.
Tongues of Stone aims to change the rhythm of the city and make concrete space speak through dance.
In a quest to make visible the lightest of art forms, STRUT joins the Barcelona-based Dancing Cities Network and brings its voice to worldwide conversations between dance, architecture, public space and social change.
